We hear the term, "What a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive."
At first glance, we might interpret this to mean that liars become entangled in their own deceptions. However, I believe it's actually an elegant analogy for the skilled art of deception. Spider webs, depending on their builder, are intricate masterpieces of elaborate, well-defined design. They are both beautiful and practical. It catches its prey effectively as it is mostly invisible and perfectly placed to be in the path of its hopeful victims. The strings of silk making up its well-planned weaving are indistinguishable one from the next. And so in this calculated "tangle," our eyes would never be able to determine where one part begins and the other ends. Such is deception.
It's crafted beautifully, mixing lies so perfectly with truth that one cannot distinguish between them, creating a fascinating structure that appears to make perfect sense. Deception is not simple. It's neither obvious nor dubious in the hands of a skilled practitioner. With so much truth woven into it, it becomes quite difficult to recognize as falsehood.
It can be analyzed and researched and philosophized and come out looking like a dazzling gem, just as a spider web sparkles mesmerizingly as it reflects the morning dew. But the lie, the lie inside is waiting to capture and render you defenseless and unaware even as the enemy closes in to devour you. This is the art of deception, and so many use it and so many learn it from the father of lies himself. "Why would you not want to be like God? Isn't that what He would want? Would He have this fruit here if it were going to harm you? It's here just for you?" And while there might have been truth so intricately crafted into that lie because of course the tree was there for Adam and Eve when it was the right time, it wasn't for them then. And just like that, so easily, they were caught in the deadly web.
Why is this important to understand? It goes beyond the obvious. Deception makes its way into everything we consume daily - in news media, entertainment, popular shows like "Ancient Aliens," and even YouTube videos from our favorite content creators. These sources contain so many fragments of truth that they seem to demand complete acceptance, yet not everything they present is true all the time. The sprinkled truth is just enough to make us embrace the whole package uncritically. Yet at the other extreme, some become so wary and obsessed with "discerning" lies that they reject everything wholesale, throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Neither approach demonstrates wisdom. Instead, our main focus should be seeking God's wisdom. He promises that when we ask for wisdom with faith, He will give it freely.
James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
What do you think deception really is and how do you see it affecting believers and non-believers?
